Does anyone around here watch “Little People, Big World”? It’s the TLC reality show about the married couple, Matt and Amy Roloff, and their children … many of the message boards dedicated to the show are fixated on one thing — Amy’s questionable housekeeping skills. (And it’s always Amy they’re questioning, never Matt.)
Now housekeeping isn’t one of my top skills either…I just try to stay one step ahead of the health inspector. But I’d also like to think that if a camera crew were following me around 24/7, I’d probably clean like my mother was coming to visit.
Amy has four children, three of whom are teenagers and could easily help out around the house. But it seems none of them has that skill either. In the twin 17-year-old boys’ room, you can’t see the floor most of the time. Actually I couldn’t even make out their beds…
But Amy and Matt are pretty laid back about it, never really complaining. Oh, Amy does that mom thing, asking the kids to put a dish in the sink every once in awhile, but otherwise I don’t think she really cares.
And is that a bad thing? Are we really too fixated on keeping a clean house? I know I’m not. I’d rather challenge the kids in a game of Scrabble than worry about whether the dishes are put away.

To each there own. They should be able to keep their home what ever way they want. They are the ones who have to live in it. They have other things that are more important to them.

I know people say "Well now that the Roloffs are on TV they should keep their house clean." But, if they normally aren't like that then why put on a front for those watching? I personally don't think they should. I think they should stay and act as close to what they normally do as possible. After all, that is what makes them and the show so interesting.
I can tell you this, if they came across as a perfect can do no wrong family I definitely would not be watching.

Someone in another thread or even earlier in this one...not sure, but they said that with 4 teenages and matt, how can she keep a spotless house. I agree with them... I am sure there are very few perfect houses in this world. I know mine isn't perfect and I have no children. LOL In the mornings it is a marathon to get to work 5 minutes late, if I had children to pickup after....have mercy! ROFL

There are clean freaks SO involved in keeping a spotless home they don't even seem to enjoy their kids. I would much rather see parents who spend quality time with their kids than worry about this. I too like to see the Roloffs portrayed as they are and they are not ashamed of it!

???? Huh? What are ya talking about now Riggs? Are ya trying to imply that I think I'm perfect? I'm not perfect (like the BB) and never claim to be. Never was. Never will be. Wouldn't want to be. There's no fun in being perfect. :-D

I agree with you bluebird48. It is more important to spend time with the kids then the house. The kids are going to remember that you cared enough to spend time with them.

Amy and the house....I have to agree that if the house were in sportless shape all the time it would not have made me want to watch. People complain about the house but I just wonder about their homes....how many REALLY have a sportless home, neatly decorated and always company ready for tea and cake? I doubt not that many.
Amy makes me feel like a sister. I am welcome in her home, regardless of what it looks like. Because Amy has this attitude with the state of her home, it makes her visitors that much more welcome and at home there. Have you ever been to someones house where you were afraid to touch the couch or could not eat past the kitchen counter?? I'd much rather pull up a chair or move a pile of clothes in Amy's house then feel uptight at the other house.
Kudos for Amy...she ROCKS :thumb: :woot:
As Debbie5 says:
debbie5, who has stuff on the floor just like in Amy's house....only I thought it was only ME who couldn't get all her kids' crap picked up every day & who wasn't "Martha". Thank God for Amy. She saved me a lot of anxiety over clutter.

Amy is very lazy when it comes to making her children and Matt help with the household chores. Matt worked so hard in making the house what it is today from the very beginning and now no one takes pride in the accomplishemtns. The door the boys bedroom is a disgrace and it appears they sleep on mattresses with sleeping bags......pretty bad when your in the limelight. Kate Gosselins has 8 kids and a hubby and her home is spotless.

I agree to each his own. I'm not the best housekeeper either. Our girls are old enough tho that I make them clean their bedrooms really good once a week. Since they are out for the summer, I had rather spend time with them than cleaning a house all day. I do keep my laundry up and wash the dishes, but everything else can wait till I get to it. We are not "Promised Tomorrow", so I think it's better to spend quality time with family first. Just my opinion here and not trying to make anyone mad at me.

I think you stated your opinion very well Mom2!! A clean house is nice, but cleaning can wait. Precious time with your kids goes by far to quickly.

Actually, that "mattresses with sleeping bags" is kind of a 'gonie thing- I'm willing to bet about half of their friends do so as well.
I've never quite figured out why, but due to my Asperger's I like something similar- sheets and extremely heavy quilts.

The door to the boy's room is from their childhood and full of memories, which is why they keep it. Don't you watch the show?
