yea i will probably take a look there. And if you have five people I really doubt that it would expensive as just one, Im sure there are better deals for them and what not.
I have to be honest and say that I wouldn't want to go. There will be so many people there and it would be a complete zoo. I would love to see the farm but I'll opt for a time when the family isn't as popular as they are now.

06-13-2007, 07:52 AM
id still like to see it.. you can only do it once a year... anyhoo i looked on travelocity and expedia and if you book everything at once like hotel, car, room it is cheaper something like 630 all together.

Looks like from the answers to Matt's question that they will be gone the first two weeks...So guys lets see what we can get going for good size group. Some are talking about bunking up if the whole family isnt going.
Although Im 3 hours away Im willing to do what I can from this end...
I know there are a few things that we could do in the city together...I hear the skyride is a must. You get to see a view of the whole city and on a clear day even see Mount Hood...
So look for poll for the dates of October 19-21

If it's the 19th, I think I can swing this being the day for our yearly pumpkin field trip for the daycare as well. By then I'll have figured out how to get 6 child seats into the wife's minivan.....
seebert
06-14-2007, 09:39 AM
I also saw Oct 20-21...We always go to the farm twice (once for the daycare on a Friday, once for ourselves on a Saturday). I'd be willing to put up 2 to 6 people at my house in Beaverton- depending on whether you're willing to sleep on floors or not.

Yea the closest Airport is Portland International which if you need the Airport Letters it is PDX. Sure is a great Airport like this video with the Alaska Air Landing from Los Angeles.

e-mail me privately for my cells& home phone #s before you come, and to check to see if there is room.
When you get into PDX (Portland International Airport) take the Red Line MAX train to the opposite end (PDX is at one end, Beaverton's at the other end of the line) and call me when you get through the tunnel. No matter what time it is, I'll meet the train at the transit center (from bed to driving there would take about 15 minutes- about the same distance the tunnel is from the transit center).

HI ALL,
JUST A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT THE POSSIBLE TRIP IN OCT.
1) what hotel would be best to stay at as far getting to the farm
2) how far is the farm from the airport?
Riggs
06-15-2007, 06:01 PM
all I have is that is #2 which would be about 30 Miles from the airport.

Ok guys so If the 19th is a Friday, then I can't make it that day. And I have a football player, I hope homecoming is not on that Saturday, which would be the day I choose, my daughter's birthday is the 19th so the twentieth is a great way to spend her birthday gift.

Man, I wish I can go. I guess I better start saving and trying to find someone to go with me. Everyone I know either don't want to go or don't know how to save money and will never have enough to go.
Lets see what I can come up with.
seebert
06-18-2007, 02:33 PM
Just about any Beaverton or Hillsboro motel would be good to stay at. Getting to the west side of town from the airport by car is pretty easy:
Follow signs to I84, take it towards Portland. Then follow the signs for US-30 West. Cross the river, get in the center lane, follow signs for Zoo/Beaverton. This will put you on OR26, which is the freeway leading out to the Beaverton/Hillsboro/the Roloffs. The Roloff's exit is Helvetia/Washington County Fairgrounds. Head North to get to Grossen Drive (off Helvetia Road), South to get to Hillsboro.

So, is there a GENERAL consensus as to when people are going to go that 3rd weekend? Saturday, Sunday, both, neither, Friday???? I'm trying my darndest to see what I can do and how to get there (I'm thinking my daughter and I might come by train to Seattle - possibly stay with bballnumbers) because this is just a once in a lifetime thing (to me), but would love to see when everyone is thinking of coming........

Count me in too as long as I'm back for our Anniversary on the 23rd.
The 22nd is Labor Day .. hope that doesn't count for heavy air travel.
Anyway, I guess I'll come in on Friday night so I can rest the aching bones from jet-lag in the hot tub.

hmmmmm.... Travelocity is beating Expedia from where I'm at.
hmmmmm....
Marriott Portland Downtown Waterfront (shrugs-dependable)(gotta luv virtual tours & reviews)
Larkspur Landing Portland-Hillsboro (looks close to everything, I dunno)
(shrugs) I know I don't want to go to the Farm one day and just sit around the room the rest of the time. Let's Plan & Play !!!

and

We should "Ask Mikey", where's a good, decent place. (I personally want to know if there's Snowboarding in October on the Hood, too - Lol )
-Plus- I want to *Double-make SURE* it's okay if we pile in on the farm.

I have to pick a connecting city. Of course 1 is Chicago. I can fly to Portland and maybe get in a quick visit with some Chitown friends. Or Denver.
Just playing around. 3 months to try to save.

If you have a choice of connecters, go with Denver or Boise, they are really nice airports.

Oh that's great! Have friends in both! But I don't like quick visits. :? Any visit is better than none right? I just know to stay away from Atlanta. Yikes! I had heard a lot about Dallas too but had to connect there going to my sister's and that was a piece of cake.

It's *great* to be met by someone at a lay-over. It gives ya' the opportunity to hug them when you might not otherwise have had the chance. :D And *try* hard to stear clear from Cinci. Cinci's my only major nightmare story with late, turtle slow shuttles, security who pointed us the wrong way, obviously missing the plane and sat there for 6 hrs waiting on a flight out to Savannah (where our luggage somehow came in 3 hours *after* our late arrival, when it should have beat us there.) 9 hrs in terminals is a bit much, but people watching & conversing with strangers is always a hoot. Hey! Positive.... Savannah gave us a free lunch & it was Delish.
Grab those Brass Rings, baby.

Ok Siebert--you could check into a hotel close to the airport for a block of rooms at a discount rate. I know the LaQuinta is managed by someone I know-I should call him. If we could get a block of rooms for a reasonable rate--That motel is close to the airport and has a great continental breakfast, I have been there for a convention before.

again...the package deals on expedia and what not are pretty cheap all together like 545 or something for flight, room, and car.. unfortunately I think you need to be 25 to get a car and that I am not..only 23..

I've had good experiences with Expedia, but my personal choice is Travelocity because they *do* have that little gnome guy following you arround, fixing whatever problems that may occur. We were upgraded to an extremely costly room twice, at no extra charge just because there was a problem with the rooms that the hotel put us in. That's guaranteed service. :D

A Beary Loving Daycare has set the 19th for our Kids Field Trip and the 20th for our Family Trip, which fits in with the list plans.
I'll look into the hotel closest to me in Beaverton for a block of rooms for that date- let them know it's tentative but I'll bet It'd be cheaper than anything closer to the hotel, it's within 6 blocks of a MAX station, and they've got a Black Bear Diner in the parking lot (great food). We could caravan from there- it's only about 15 minutes to the farm from there during rush hour, 10 minutes normally.
Also, once again, anybody willing to camp out on the floor in sleeping bags is welcome to stay at my house.

I like Mike's tips better- for one they're all DAS customers. I'm not real sure the hotel by Black Bear is (it's used to be an Econolodge, now a Comfort Inn & Suites).
Second, if you can afford it (rooms are between $65-$125) Grand Lodge is definately a great place to stay- it's really in Forest Grove (out west of Hillsboro a few exits on 26) and Shannon and I stay there for her birthday every year (we're creatures of habit). Take a swimsuit- their Japanese soaking pool (VERY big hot tub) is heaven on earth! And the Iron Grill is a McMinnamin's pub- complete with microbrews on tap.

07-12-2007, 09:57 AM
The way I see it, looks like a possible headcount is 30-40 people. I'm not sure ANYBODY in the family is aware of this- but that's a drop in the bucket for what they were getting for a Saturday crowd last October. Just don't expect to see Amy's house, or even get close to the house. I'm sure Sheriff Ron will love to have us all hang out in the Blacksmith Shop with him as the kids run off and play....
KimRenee2

Sheriff Ron? Blacksmith?
Bert? To be honest, I don't have any expectations of seeing any of the family .... now it would be cool if MIKE joined us for a dinner, get-together, whatever...
but in my mind's eye, it's more about romping around with friends I've been romping around with for several months now. I've never 'talked' to a Roloff, so again, there's no expectation there.
And where there is no expectation, there is no disappointment.

I'm also looking forward to exploring Oregon nature.

I also get a bit "queezy" if I can't see where I'm going (I get sea sick if I can't look forward out a window) and I'm a bit worried about this. I sure sounds good on paper, though! *gulp* It's a once in a lifetime thing, to me, and it'd be worth the upset stomach!
oh my gosh. Brings back memories. We(me my mom, and sister) went on a train ride via Amtrak ONE time when I was like 7 and one time only. My mom thought it would be a nice experience and we would all enjoy it instead of flying or driving. So, we get on the train and within hours, my mom is running to the bathroom barfing her butt off! Then, we had this old drunk guy sitting next to us cussing and puking and eventually, he got kicked off the train. Lastly, half way through the trip, our train hit a car and luckily, nobody got hurt. That was a train ride from h*ll
  No way!

You guys, the train is sooo much fun. I just did it 42 hours on the train, riding through country you don't usually get to see. My daughter and I had so much fun. We would get out at the stops where they put on food and water, I would buy soda and water in the train stations, It was cheaper in there. So don't get scared off by one horror story, I met lots of people who travel only by train.

Ahh, I like flying. The take off and landing is awesome! Also, being in the air so high up gives you a sense of freedom and a bit of a high from it all. Although, a crash still always plagues my mind each time we are up in the air
bballnumbers
07-13-2007, 07:35 PM
Yep and then there is the air turbulance, narrow seats, not being able to walk around, now walking FREELY around a train car that is freedom. good food, being able to bring a knife, or use a real one, not having to take your shoes off just to get close to the train, bringing more than one carry on plus your checked baggage. Yeah the time but it is mostly quiet, peaceful, and very restful, time to read a book or take cat naps.

You're right about that though with security and room to move. Seriously, I just don't like trains because not to be mean to anyone and I am not directing this towards you so dont't take it the wrong way, but it seems like a lot of people were dirty, if you will, on the train ride we were on. Airplanes have cleaner people probably because airplane tickets cost more than train tickets. I am not trying to be mean honestly. I was just giving my reason for why I like planes. :D

Honey? Have you ever had to sit next to someone who REEKED in coach??
I have!! Once upon a time there was a nasty, nasty man who wasn't raised to believe in personal hygiene
and he slept with his stupid hands folded on top of his head !!! (the snoring was dealable)
Waves... and I'm mean Waves of pungent raunch whirled around my head as I sat there quietly dying. I WAS dying !!!
The attendants um... whiffed my situation and giggled while they sweetly moved me to a more pleasant area.

Nothing worse than being on transatlantic flight with an obnoxious person. Happened to me a few years ago. I had a window seat and dared not get up because the person would get upset with me. She sat there and took up more than her space. Wouldn't even speak when I spoke to her. Never even would look at me. So I was afraid to get up-had to once to go to the potty. She got a little huffy when I insisted. It takes longer to fly back to the US than to fly to Europe-so it was a long flight nonstop from Amsterdam to Memphis. I am really nervous on those long flights so it made it almost unbearable. It was about 10 or 12 hours long.

On one flight I was on from Kennedy to Orlando, my mom and I sat in front on two seemily fataly ill people. They were a couple, probably in their early 30s. They both coughed and sneezed all over the back of mine and my mom's heads. One mentioned needing his inhaler the other her painkiller. Both mentioned being airsick. When the airline attendant came and asked them which one gets the diabetic meal, my mom and I were by then bent over with laughter. What a pathetic duo. There should be medical check ups before one can board a plane or at least provide surgical masks for those sickies. :x

I once sat next to a "Ancient Relic Diva Queen" in first class. *ALL* she did the entire flight from Salt Lake to Dallas/Ft.Worth was sit WAY up on her window seat, wave her hand, SNAP her fingers and high pitched holler "Yoo-Hoo! Yoo-Hoo!" to the poor, patient attendant. That woman was SO high-maintenance. "Yoo-hoo! Yoo-hoo! I need more ice". "Yoo-hoo! Yoo-hoo! It's too cold in here". "Yoo-hoo! Yoo-hoo! I need more ice". "Yoo-hoo! Bring me another drink". "Yoo-hoo! This has too much ice".

I try to be funny especially with my class. We tease each other a lot and when one of them is about to lose it I'll try to joke around with them to distract them. Sometimes it works.
I would love to take my class to the farm during pumpkin season but that would be a heckuva bus ride from New York to Oregon.

It's been about 2 weeks, so I'm catching up on a few replies after my vacation:
KimRenee: Ron, Matt's Dad, plays Sheriff at the wild west town every year. There's a picnic table in the blacksmith shop, and he hangs out there most of the time near as I can tell. Would be a neat place to meet up, especially because we adults can hang out at the blacksmith shop and let the kids run the tunnels.
Once again- I'm not sure when everybody else is going, but right now I'm planning on spending two days at the Roloff Farm- October 19th with the daycare kids (if this lasts more than two hours, we'll be doing well- yesterday's trip to the zoo was frightening)- and October 20th just my family.

Ok, so I know of people coming. We need to find out a good time to meet at the farm, as far as time where etc. We will maybe need to set a time when we can chat and find out who is coming exactly and when. But having a land mark to find would be a good thing.

I don't know if I can come but the farm is going to be busier than last year. It might take some planning for the group to get in. Remember last year they had to close early the day they filmed when the lot was full.

The traffic wasn't THAT bad last year....it was more like 45 minutes from Helvetia Rd to the farm, not hours.
Seebert, I can't always get on the chat and then the chat is lost so we couldn't even see what they are talking about so I say lets just leave the plans to this page and I LIKE meeting at the farm, I will just need directions from the north. So hope to see you there on the farm. BBall

Easy-peasy directions from the North:
Head South on I-5. When you get to Portland, take the I405 South/US30 exit. Get into the second lane from the left. Take the Beaverton/Oregon Zoo/US26 exit off of I405. Go about 15 miles, take the Helvetia Rd/Washington County Fairgrounds exit. Go north on Helvetia Rd- on weekends in October you'll start seeing Sven's cute pumpkin signs as soon as you get off of 26. When you go under the railroad tracks you're getting close- you'll see Helvetia Tavern on your left, the next road to the left is Grossen Drive. At this point you'll be on gravel- a funky little two lane road with a tree median. Past the end of the median it goes down to just a two lane gravel road- the farm is on the right at the end of the road. For October, Matt hires teenagers to help direct traffic & parking.

Hopefully this time they wont be fixing freeways LOL...
they were fixing a freeway during the book signing ...Made for an interesting tour of Portland--LOL
I have feeling that once one gets withing a few miles of the farm one wont need directions. I guess you can tell us how the first couple of days go.
It would be nice if we had some representative to talk to the Roloffs so that we could figure out how to get the group in together.
Hey it looks like the numbers are rising the closer it gets. I have a feeling that it will be close to or probably over 30 or more.

Yeah, what if you can't get in. Seeing how crazy it was last year they should probably open the farm to only Oregon residents. I don't know how the farm is going to deal with all the people this year since they will probably get tons of fans from all over the world. You guys should probably go on a weekday and very early in the morning.

HI;
Good luck getting ito the farm, we don;t live very far from there, its POSTED and no one gets on it unless invited. Believe me we have tried. I was heart broken when we saw the POSTED SIGN but do understand. Can; you see how it would be if everyone would show up there.
Here's wishing you all the luck in the world, let us all know how it was.

Matthieu............. where you to the farm recently? If so why? They are not open for business untill Oct. If there is a sign there now I would assume it is there to keep fans and others from just intruding on the family. The farm isn;t open 24/7.......... they have a life during the off season of Pumpkins. So I would say please respect thier privacy.

Mattieu... I didn;t mean to ffend you or anger you.......... you did Not state when you were there and was curious as to why you would be there off season. You told people who are planning atrip good luck geeting in because of signs. You even state you would give your eyeteeth to meet them. so that gave me the thought you were there to meet the Roloff's. And like I said it is off season, farm is open to the public in Oct. As far as fixing the freeways is concerned- check http://www.tripcheck.com before you go and they'll have icons on all the construction in Oregon.
And I asked the question in the Ask Matt section about parking- he claims he's got it taken care of for this year.

On going to the farm- the farm is only open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in October for Pumpkin Season. They had visitors from all over the world last year as well; Matt says he's got the parking situation straightened out so we won't have to worry as much this year (given that he took out 3/4ths of the peach orchard, I can believe that). This thread is about an October 20th trip.

Ok so now that I have directions, and We are only going on a weekend when the farm is open, we should decide on how we are all going to know each other, a color shirt or hat, maybe a name tag with our screen name etc. that would be fun too. I too wish we had a rep to talk to them. Wish I could figure out how to do that. Well, my class is going on a field trip to our Pumpkin patch the 19th, they have a hay maze with a giant slide for little kids. and goats that climb and are fed at the tree tops.

Ok I will splain it---the goats climb a walk way, a narrow walk way up to the top of fir trees and they have a rigging of a can and pulley, you buy feed for twenty five cents and put it in the can, pull it to the top of the trees and it dumps over and feeds the goats, I will see if I have a picture, I just don't know how to get them on here.

I *reeeeally* don't expect the Roloff's would KICK out of state visitor/fans who are paying HUGE bucks and spending valuable time by attempting to meet them and enjoy the Farm they've watched for several seasons --- off the property in two hours.
I can understand that new rule for locals --- but not boardies who have travelled an expansive amount of miles *just* for the occassion.
(simply put: exceptions can and should be made)

It's not a hard and fast rule- you don't get "kicked off the farm". It's more along these lines:
1. You pick out your pumpkin
2. You take it to the gift shop
3. You pay your $5 for the farm tour which is strictly limited to 30 minutes (20 minutes riding around on the tour with a guide, 10 minutes playing in the Wild West Town, which is the *ONLY* thing open this year).
4. If we're lucky, and Mike has the trebuchet done, we'll get to stick around for one of the once-an-hour launches.
Otherwise, there's not much to do on the farm. Not even a decent place to sit down (other than the wild west town, which we're limited to 10 minutes for this year), and the only restrooms available to the public are outhouses.
Now it's POSSIBLE they'll make an exception for the boardies- I've sent my share of PMs to Bentlypride so I know at least one insider is aware of the plans- but I've had no confirmation that they're really expecting us other than Matt's confirmation that the family will be home that weekend.
OTOH, us locals won't leave you hanging either. We can always hit the tavern or the Grand Lodge Iron Grill afterwards, and I'll be glad to invite you all to St. Clare's Pasta Dinner at 6:00pm in Portland that evening (I'll be making my now infamous Pope Benedict sauce- sauergraten with sauerkraut flavored Hollandaise and poached egg whites. Get the pun?)
I went with my family on Sunday and we had a great time. Jeremy was the driver for our tour, both him and Zach were the drivers. It was rainy but then again this is Oregon but it was a lot of fun to take the farm in and the tour is totally worth taking to see everything. We got video and pictures that I will get posted up and share.

I know I can make conversation last a long time just standing around on a farm. I am going to our pumpkin farm on Friday and let me tell you That is fun. As for outhouses do you mean the kind that are dug in the ground or the sani-can kind.

A week left to go. When I was there last year, they had the rented Honeypot outhouses. I've got to think that the limited tour is to keep down people wandering where the family doesn't want them to go- but it's cool that Jeremy and Zach are driving tractors. They were last year as well. I'll be going the 19th with the daycare and the 20th for the boardie meet.

Yet, the irony and messed up thing about this is; my parents don't think I should drive. They think I should take a bus for the rest of my life. Uhh, I don't THINK so! Well, if you've got a bicycle, or other similarly small medium distance transportation, you could try the following:
Amtrack to Portland
Go 5 blocks South of Union Station, get on a MAX train.
Get off at Washington County Fairgrounds
Bike ~ 5 miles north (follow signs to 26, cross 26 and you'll start seeing the signs for the farm).

Maybe the sun will come out and all will be well.:thumb:
It was raining and muddy when I went too but those tractors are setup for that so I don't think there will be a problem.

Here ya go. (http://seeberfamily.org/Daycare/rf2007/)
Well, at least something to tide you over to Sunday. I even managed to turn on the GPS in my pocket and get a good track recording of the tour for Google Earth.
Very cool! :thumb: I didn't see them all cause they were taking so long to load. Did you see any of the Roloffs on that trip?

I couldn't get a lot of this to open. Some of the pics and none of the google earth stuff. Do I need to do something else to open this??
