View Full Version : Too wasteful?

I love to watch the Roloffs but have only one major complaint.
Why do they throw their good, hardly-used, unwanted or outgrown clothing into the garbage???
Haven"t Matt and Amy ever heard of the Goodwill???
I realize Matt sometimes gets frustrated with all the clutter and all the belongings left around the house, but is that any reason to toss everything willy-nilly into the trash?
1.The Goodwill (and other worthwhile groups) help the handicapped, abused animals, the homeless etc.
2. This sends the message that it is okay if you can afford it to trash things-- even tho there are those that need them and even tho the worlds dumps get overfilled eventually if no one recycled stuff.
Please teach the kids right --it is almost no more trouble to pack it off to Goodwill than to toss it into the dumpster.

I agree but what episode did they throw their clothes out in. Yeah, they sometimes have a washing backlog.... ;) (who doesn't) but I never saw that?

I don't care what my neighbors do with their old stuff, I don't care what my relatives do with their old stuff and I don't care what YOU do with YOUR old stuff. Why should I care what the Roloff's do with their old stuff?

Charity organizations are often EXTREMELY particular about what they will accept. They do not want people's "junk" and even with perfectly useable nice looking furniture they can be picky over a minor flaw.
I think this poster may have been talking about the episode where they cleaned out the kids rooms so painting could be done. In any case, we never saw any of the items close enough to know the quality or actually saw what got thrown out. There is always "dumpster diving" if you think someone has thrown out a great useable item.

Well, since landfills are starting to become crowded, I do care as should the Roloff's and I do remember the back up the dumpster episode. I do know how hard it is to get the stuff from the house to the thrift store. They could start a Coda thrift store. Having been involved in a very small thrift store, we made over 3000 dollars a month after rent and expenses.

Matt was cleaning out when he was getting the laundry room and pantry organized for Amy. His philosophy was -- if you care about it-then you won't throw it around on the floor or in some corner-so throw it away!
This is not always true with kids-but I can see his point.

I have a parent who tells her kids to clean their rooms and then after the specified time--usually after they have gone to school, she goes in with a garbage bag and anything not put away is hers for a week or more. Sometimes they have nothing in their rooms. She said it works, but you have to be consistant. I did that too, it works.

I agree with you about donating 2nd hand items. I don't know if the Roloffs were throwing things in the trash or not. But lets give credit to Matt for recycling wood from old barns etc. Remember his western town and other structure are all made from recycled wood. So I don't think we can call him wasteful.

Im totally amazed at the way some people come here just to BASH. The reasons are mostly petty. Yeah, its a free country but this board doesnt have to allow anything they dont want, yet they let this petty stuff keep going on. It was this way on the TV chat room and I was hoping it wouldnt be like this here. I dont know the Roloffs. Been to their farm twice for pumpkins and thats it. Nothing Ive ever seen on their shows has been worth the infantile petty bash threads Ive seen on this site. I hope you all dont have glass houses. This is the only thing Im going to say about this here, as they dont need their site filled up with arguments. Sheesh.

Marvin--Since this was my only criticism of the family who I really love, I would hardly call it bashing.
Mrs. Sawyer--yes I do care what my neighbors do with their unwanted articles and junk. The future of our planet is in the children and what they learn to do. In Oregon we have one of the highest rates of recycling in the US and we are the first state to pass a bottle bill.
And yes--I do appreciate Matt tearing down old barns and saving the valuable wood. I admire him for that. But why throw away valuable clothes like Amy's good coat in the reorganization episode?
No-- Goodwill is not fussy about what clothing they accept. They accept all of it. That which doesn't sell is put in huge bundles and sent to third world families.
I dont get on this site to put anyone down. I truly hope they will read this and rethink what they are doing.

Dont mind Marvin, he must've woken up on the wrong side of the bed that morning...it's called an opinion Marv, you have one and so does Pamajama. Feel free to counter Pama's opinion with one of your own, but to go off on a rant like that makes you look foolish and intolerant.
I agree Pama, if the clothing is at all still useful, then it should be donated. Like my grandfather always said, waste not want not.

Pama, I agree with you 100 percent. Why are peeps so against recycling, saving, thriftiness, generosity, etc? Don't make sense to me! I gasped when Matt threw that perfectly good clothing away! :(

If you want to continue to dog me and attack me and belittle me, take it to PMs. Don't litter the board with it, as you seem to want such. If you have something to say to me besides making fun of me, send it. Otherwise, leave me alone. TY.
