I kind of wish the Roloffs would stay home more. The show is supposed to be about living a normal life as a LP ( and I don't know about anyone else but this much travel does not seem like a normal family to me). I am a bit tired of the show becoming a travelogue.
And, shouldn't they be on the farm in the summer? When is planting/harvesting season?
Maybe someone out there who is a farmer could help me with that one. (as I am a window box farmem myself - and those are empty LOL)

Well heck...with the money they are generating from this show it's no great wonder they are traveling a lot and buying things...who wouldn't? Who doesn't want to travel? I imagine the trips are paid for by the show.
I'm not gonna lie, I'd be out and about big time with my family if I was able to do so! I don't mind watching the trips......I still think it's about the challenges of them being little people. The airport scenes with luggage...the people making fun of Zack and the other little people crossing the street during a convention..the limitations at the amusement park, etc...it all correlates IMO.

I think they travel a lot to bring some spice into the show and to give the kids more privacy at home. If they do a travel show they can get two episodes out of it and that's extra time they don't have to film at the house. JMO.

I agree with both sides... my kids and I love the outdoors and we were initially drawn to the show after seeing the pumpkin patch episode ("mom, how come we can't live on a farm, too?"). Although it's nice to see the Roloffs enjoying their travels and not being limited by their disabilities, our family fell in love with their episodes on the farm, and we hope to see more of them! :-D

A lot of families go on vacations over the summer. Since that is when this was filmed, and vacations make good tv, I don't see whats wrong with it.

1) You plant in the Spring and harvest in the Fall. Those are the busiest times of the year on a farm. In the summer you sit back and watch it grow...well you still have work but the planting and harvesting are done. Plus in the Fall Matt has the pumpkin sales and the farm is open to the public which is a very busy time for all the Roloffs.
2) Notice the name of the show, Little People, Big World. The world is not the Roloff farm. Matt and Amy have done a wonderful job to make their farm fit their life. The show does a wonderful job of showing the Roloff's making themselves fit in the "big" world. Matt made a good point when he spoke to the airline industry. They want to put his crutches in the storage above the overhead compartments. In an emergency Matt is pretty much screwed for getting off that plane in a hurry and would have to rely on someone helping him get out of the plane. I think this is a good thing showing them travel and venture out into the "Big World" and how they have to adapt to our world.
The farm is their home and I too would get a little tired of the cameras always there. Why not give the family a break and let them shoot more shows offsite.

That is a very good point. I didn't think about getting more shows out of the trips.
And the poster who pointed out that it is Little People BIG WORLD not farm is also right on target.

I also think the traveling shows how places are not made for LP. It show how hard it is in different places to be LP. But at the same time the Roloff family is showing how normal they can be as a family anywhere they go!

Examples: Matt getting around the boat on his crutches, Yosemite being disabled friendly, going up the lighthouse steps (easy for the kids, harder for Amy, impossible for Matt), crutches on the beach.

I like the farm and home scenes but I also enjoy most of the travel shows (minus some of those soccer conventions.) I think it not only raises awareness to meet the needs of LPs but for all travelers with disabilities.
I know there are parts of the world where people with disabilities are just not seen out in public and raising awareness and acceptance could eventually lead to making a better life for them as well.

Great post Pink! It is extremely important to raise public awareness about travelers with disabilities and LPBW has helped do so in many ways.
Btw, I actually like the soccer conventions but then again, I love soccer, LOVE men that play soccer, and have always wanted to learn how to play myself.

I dont mind the travel but like you I prefer the Farm episodes. I enjoy the projects around the farm ,the chickens and just any farm related show.
I would like to see Matts parents more as like them both a lot.

I think there needs to be a show on the travel channel about travelling when you have disabilities. You can't imagine how many places label themselves as handicaped accessible and then when you get there, they really aren't. I have osteoarthritus in both knees and walking is very difficult for me. When we went on vacation this summer, we went to Northern Wisconsin and Michigan and went to some areas that were suppposed to be handicapped accessible. I can't remember the name of them but there were these water falls that were supposed to be handicapped accessible to get to and when we arrived at the park we found that only the entrance of the park was handicapped accessible. You had to walk a mile to get to the falls and then walk 100 steps down to get to the viewing platform. I tried making it and eventually just sat down on a bench and let my family go ahead of me. It was hot and I was bored and feeling very conspicuous as people passed me by. I think the least the park could have done was make some wheelchairs or electric carts available for handicapped people. The irony of it was that my husband did some investigating and found that the falls could be seen from a back road that was an employee entrance only. So, yes, he ignored the sign, loaded me in the car and away we went. I think the park could have made that same road available to handicapped people. But it got me to thinking that there needs to be some guide books or a show featuring people with physical handicapps that shows where we can go that is truly handicapped accessible. I tried looking for a way to email the Travel Channel but didn't find anything.
I remember when Matt had to fold up his electric cart and have one of the kids carry it so he could climb the stairs (where was that, Grand Canyon maybe? I don't remember) and he commented that he was luckier than someone who truly was in a wheel chair and couldn't get out and walk a few steps like he did. There needs to be a better break down, especially on our state and Federal Parks on the meaning of "handicapped accessible". The entrance to the park, next to the gift shop and the food stand, is not, in my opinion, worth me paying an entrance fee if the whole park is not truly handicapped accessible.

I think they are also trying to show how they have to make due or impravise as LP's out in the world not just on the farm!

WoW what is a normal family life!!
Im sure there are familys out there that spent a good month or more on vacation. I had been in 42 states by the time I was 16. My family was very big on traveling and Im so glad they took time out of farm life to take me to experence more than just the farm.
What they are doing for their kids is wonderful, if they can afford taking these life experences and doing it now while they can do it with their children is a plus.
Seems to be a bit of envy in those words....
Planting time is different depending on where you live. Winter Wheat is planted in fall, can and will freeze. Mostly spring, April and May. I have my large garden planted by May 15,that is central plains. Southern plains its different again still.Parts of Tex, Florida, Arizona, California its year round. Im not sure about the northwest.
