View Full Version : Oregon Looks Beautiful!

Oregon looks like a really beautiful state. I happened to catch a re-run episode of LPBW this morning (it was the ep. where Matt took the boys and some friends on a camping trip) and I began to realize what a scenic place it is. I live in PA and most of the people visiting us from out-of-state admire its beauty, but I've gotta say, I'm a bit jealous of you Oregonians. You've got it made- beaches, mountains, forests... *sigh*
I have a photographer friend that I write to from time to time who lives in Oregon and I asked her to e-mail me some pics of the place. Heh heh! ^_^ Now I can look at Oregon whenever I want to.

Is PA the state that is know for it's beautiful Amish countryside? I think you can find glorious gifts from God in each and every state.

That is a state I would love to see. I've been to Maine a couple times, but all those NE Colonial states just intrigue me! :D :D

That lake they went to on the camping trip is in Southern Central Oregon near Crater Lake between Bend, where I live, and Klamath Falls. This is a gorgeous place to live, but it's expensive. Still, it definitely has perks.
This is what I see almost every morning on my drive to work.

Those are just two of the seven peaks that make up our "skyline." These are some of the mountains you see off in the distance when they are on top of Little Cultus.
But I have to admit, I was a little freaked they were firing a gun in Central Oregon in August. Central and Eastern Oregon are a vast high desert and prone to wildfires. Yep, it's true. Most of Oregon is actually desert. It's just that most of the population lives in the green, lush part west of the Cascade mountains where it rains a lot. Those of us east of the Cascades enjoy around 300 days of sun a year. When people ask me how I handle all that rain, I laugh.

We moved from the Dallas are 10 years ago and now live in the country. I wouldn't go back for nothing!!! I love seeing my deer and only hearing the faint sound of gun shots during hunting season. We would hear gunshots in Dallas and we knew there wan't any hunting going on.

ML, the first time I drove up to IL, the crops weren't up. I told my BF, best friend, that it was odd to see such flat land for acres and acres. I told her that police don't have a chance on hiding for speeders in the spring. LOL I bet the love hiding in the corn when they can though.

The city has it's good points. You know nice to visit, not live there. My oldest sister lived there for a long time. She even had the classic city apartment with a huge blood stain on the wood floor. Wouldn't want to have visited today though. They had a city wide black out.

From what I remember, she said a homosexual couple lived there before her and they had a fight in which one kicked the door in and the other stabbed him. I don't remember if he died. The bottom of the door was still badly dented when my sister lived there. That stain freaked me out but it never bothered my sister.

I know apartments in NYC are not always easy to get. I would have been freaked out by it.
I once lived in a furnished apartment this was when I was in college. The landlady told me after I had been there awhile that the bed I slept on had been the one her brother had died on. I had a hard time sleeping on the bed after I heard that. I guess it also proves I was not psychic. I never really believed in that stuff till recently a friend told me that I could see auras. She told me this based on something I said.
GrayC
06-28-2007, 01:37 PM
How does she know you can see auras?
I've had some psychic dreams. One morning I dreamed the water coming out of my bathtub faucet was red. Red in dreams means danger. That night I had a huge flood in the apartment (a basement apartment) and had to evacuate for a week. I pay close attention to my dreams now.

Really I am serious- how can something so beautiful be out there and I have not been able to see it? I never even thought of the state of Oregon before I saw Matt's show. Really, Oregon was just a state nothing more. Now I see the beauty and I am just gasping. Why on earth would anyone have to take a vacation if they live in that state?! That's it Killene I am sold on that state- I am telling my husband to do a job search this week and see what jobs are available!!
Thanks for the eye opener!!! What beauty there is to behold there!!! :D

I've got two weeks of work left- then I get 4 days at Elk Lake (near Bend) and 4 days at Nehalem Bay (Manzanita, where the boys went on their birthday and where Amy took Molly when the boys went camping). Christopher wants to go fishing- sometime before then I've got to sort out the tags for stocked brook trout.....

Talk about seeing all the sites, that's practically one end of the state to the other from Bend to Manzanita  But with 8 days, spending one of them driving from east to west doesn't seem so bad. Hope you guys get lots of brooks on your trip!

It'll sure feel like it, I figure I've got about 12 hours of driving during the week's vacation- though you've got to remember, Bend is only halfway across the state- literally in the middle. And Elk Lake is on the way back to Eugene- my wife has relatives in Springfield, so our itinerary is likely to be more like:
Friday night- go to my parent's farm in Silverton. When the rest of the family is ready, Friday night or Saturday morning, caravan to Elk Lake.
Tuesday- drive home to Beaverton, with a stop at Springfield for visiting. Unload van.
Wednesday- send Christopher off to school! While he's at school, repack van, visit Beaverton Farmer's market. Pick Christopher up from school, drive to Nehalem Bay State Park, and at 4:00pm check into the Yurt.
Sunday- drive home from beach
Monday- unpack & get spare seat for wife's van
Tuesday- take daycare kids on annual zoo trip (we need the spare seat before this, so I'm just hoping some wrecking yard in the area has a 2002 Chevy Venture I can cannibalize to make our van an 8 passenger).
Wednesday- go back to work.
It'll be a VERY interesting vacation.

I love living here in Oregon. It's usually not as hot as it's been today - whew it's hot! I grew up in southern california, and we used to vacation in places like this! Not far from where we live is a place called Silver creek falls - It's beautiful!! I don't understand why people aren't moving here in droves! The cost of houses here are a fraction of those where I grew up - and for a nicer view! 8)

There are a lot of great things in Oregon, however keep in mind that it rains a lot here, at least in the western half of the state, pretty much every season except for summer. So for all the beautiful green we have here we only have so much time we can enjoy it in the sun.

Funny talking about Silver Creek Falls- I grew up in Silverton. At the rate we're going LL Stub State Park will be to my son what Silver Creek Falls was to me.
We've had a few great governors in Oregon for public lands:
Oswald West, back in the early history of the State, had the foresight to put beaches under control of the State Highway Administration, now ODOT, who leases them out to Parks & Recreation (except for a stretch near Florence and another stretch from Seaside to Warrenton- those are still officially state highways, with a speed limit of 25).
Tom McCall, famous for the Willamette pollution cleanup and the bottle bill, is also famous for 10 new state parks in the 1970s, and the Bike Bill which created several hundred miles of bike paths and lanes all over Oregon.
And of course, our current Ted Kulongoski, liking how those other two previous governors were remembered, is now signing into law the biggest expansion the Parks and Recreation department has ever had- several new state parks (LL Stub is just the first) and also turning over certain other state lands to them (State Fairgrounds is now under their control, as is the Capitol Mall).
